The Comeback Kid: New Sports Looks
Andrea Praet, Trend Director - New York

The desire for authenticity and preservation of traditional techniques is beginning to spill over from sportswear into the active market. These new influences provide a fresh update for streetwear and active styling, which creates a demand for clever basics with collegiate undertones.

Pared-down looks emerge as brands reinterpret preppy references, ranging from the American Ivy look (and Japan’s spot-on impersonation of it) to the outdoor lifestyle of a Scandinavian fisherman.

The inspiration is evident in several ways. In palettes, harmonies of clubhouse colors like navy, burgundy and hunter green are slightly darker-than-average in hue and are diligently paired with neutrals like grey and white. Patterns are reduced to minimal stripes, and easy checks are a welcome change after the infatuation with multi-colored brights and all over prints. These crisp lines are being used in a more heavy and graphic way and are kept to a minimum with blocked patterns on a clean background. Other references are subtle and appear within the details or construction of the garments. These attributes are meant to conserve craftsmanship and the brand’s heritage.
